Pirates: Treasure & Treachery 8/27/2010 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Homeschool Day Learning opportunities include pirate-themed activities in the galleries, live performances and storytelling by costumed interpreters and exploration of our temporary exhibit, “Pirates: Treasure and Treachery.” In the museum classroom, hands-on workshops led by museum educators are available for an additional fee. Workshop Fee: Additional $2 per child, per workshop (enrollment is optional) Schedule of events: 9 a.m. Museum opens/check-in table opens10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pirate activities in the galleries and live performances 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Workshops (optional addition to your visit - see schedule below) 5 p.m. Museum ClosesWorkshops (optional): (Additional $2 per child) A Sailors Life for Me – 10 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.(Grades 3 – 12) Come listen to tales of the sea from a real tall ship sailor! Nathanael Logsdon will explain what it's like to sail a square rigger. Also see reproduction and original artifacts used by sailors of the eighteenth century! Make your own Pirate Ship – 10 to 10:45 a.m./11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m./1:30 to 2:15 p.m./3 to 3:45 p.m. (Grades 2 – 8) Check out some of our model ships and then use what you discover to design and create your own pirate ship out of everyday household items. How fast will yours sail through the water? How much treasure will it carry? Join us for this exciting workshop to find out!
(Grades K – 5) Pirates used the symbols and colors on their flags to warn other ships. Sometimes other sailors were so scared that they gave up without a fight! During this engaging workshop you will learn about the flags flown by infamous pirates such as Blackbeard and Black Bart. Then you’ll design and create your own pirate flag to take home! Sword Fighting Techniques – 2 to 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. (Grades 3 – 12) We’ve all heard the stories of pirates storming ships with their swords held high. During this unique workshop led by our historic interpreters, you will get an up-close look at reproduction swords and practice several sword fighting techniques in our 3rd floor Tournament Ring. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
